Our knowledge of the world is informed by our history. Skewed data sets distort perceptions and opinions, and corrupt predictions for the future. Bias is encoded in archives and in prognostics. However, we can attempt to redress gaps and omissions by turning them into catalysts for care, time-travel, speculation, or even accountability.
Curated by Aga Paulina Młyńczak, this exhibition originated from our shared core interest in a tweak of human nature which created and still perpetuates structural racism, and which will also survive it. Through different artistic approaches, McGurk and Salt take a look at the present and cast themselves into the future. Salt uses personal voices and imagination as means for recovery, while McGurk uses archives and studies bureaucratic frameworks as a way of getting closer to the universal human flaws at the root of the problem.
The works were developed in tandem with ‘Reparative Trespassing’ – a publication edited and introduced by Isabella Shields. Therein we collected elements of urban planning, community stories, personal narratives, poetic geology, hidden ciphers and data visualisations in order to build fragments of future archives and host past spectres.
‘Reparative Trespassing’ will launch March 24th at WASPS, South Block, 6:30-9pm. The event’s programme, developed by Nell Cardozo, will feature a discussion on reparative or speculative archiving with McGurk and Salt, followed by a film screening of ‘Diviner’ (2017) by Frances Scott.
The exhibition presents sculpture and sound works from Moira Salt on the ground floor. The first floor displays Fiona McGurk’s mixed media installations, prints, and moving images. The top floor invites audiences to sit with two sound and video pieces allowing a dialogue between the visions.
