Exhibition

This exhibition presents a summation of a year-long, technology-assisted, international collaboration between Tinja Ruusuvuori (Finland), Madde Edlund (Sweden) and Aga Paulina Młyńczak (Poland, by way of Glasgow). Each floor of the gallery is occupied by an immersive installation which, with the help of multimedia tendrils woven through human sound, sight and utterance, explore the dynamic between language and society.

Released alongside the exhibition is a collaborative publication by the same title. This hand-bound edition elaborates the creative process which informed the installations. The publication takes into account everything from the mundane everyday circumstances of the artists to their theoretical motivations, and the methods of community engagement which came to build the foundations of the show.

What are the possibilities when community and art space are brought together and work in tandem? Alternative ways of engagement became necessary after the onset of the pandemic and this show is a testament to the power of technology in conjoining separate voices into an experimental choir.

Whether visual or sonic, each work in Flock Circumstance is a collage that encourages us to think about ways of linking with each other. This cooperative space proposes a ground which could upset the normal hierarchies of those who speak and those who speak for others. Each of the three projects aims to be flexible, resourceful and nourishing, a compassionate heterotopia, a space which creates an image of society yet floats somewhere outside of it.
