M.E. Smit-Dicks is based in Glasgow and Toronto. With a background in costume construction, she previously studied at the University of Toronto, majoring in Philosophy and Visual Studies. Smit-Dicks has exhibited her work at Tramway (Glasgow), Preston Gallery (Cambridge, CA), 8eleven Galley (Toronto), G Gallery (Toronto), Birch Contemporary (Toronto), Nuit Blanche (Toronto), Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (Toronto), Gallery Stratford (CA), Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, CA), and the Art Gallery of Ontario (CA).
Smit-Dicks’ sculptures and assemblages are reconfigured from found objects, waste materials, and reclaimed textiles. The works gesture towards movement, stricture, embrace, and other sculptural and performative relationships captured from everyday life. These configurations attempt to reinvigorate discourse around material culture and the often-strange concrete properties of the world around us.
